New Years

Tue Dec 22, 2009, 10:47 AM
So, I've never made a New Years resolution before. This year, I'm gonna have like, 5.

First is the same as everyones, work out. Which isn't such a big deal for me, I already have been. But this year I didn't for like, 7 months because my car broke down and I only wanted to use the company van to get to work and back, not drive all over to go to the gym. I actually just started doing mixed martial arts training. Which is awesome because I've wanted to for a long time. And in doing that, I get to get in better shape than I would if I was just lifting weights.

Second, is I'm gonna start to draw more again. This one is a big one because I'm gonna go on an energy drink diet so I can stay up late and draw after my wife goes to bed three nights a week. That one is gonna be tough, I really enjoy sleep.

Third, I'm gonna eat better, again, another one that's on everyone's list. But if I'm gonna be using energy drinks I need to cut out the other stuff.

Fourth, is I'm gonna get all my debt paid off. Except for my house and car payments, those are just kind of expected. So I'm trying to get a second job so I can really hammer that stuff out.

Last is I'm gonna be a better father. Not that I've been bad. All in all I would consider myself a really good father. But, I'm reading a book about parenting, and it's talking about how long you really have to make an impact on your child. And they say basically from when they're born until they're 7 or 8 you really shape who they're gonna be. My son is 3 already, and I realize how precious these next 5 years are. So, whatever areas I can improve in fatherwise, I'm going to.

The other thing is, kind of right along with the last resolution, is that I want Jess to be able to stop working so she can stay home with Colten, and really invest herself into these next few years. So that is going to be a daily prayer for us that Jess can call it quits at the end of this school year (she's a teacher). Any prayers u throw our way also are much appreciated.

Hope you all have a resolution that you can accomplish this year.
Merry Christmas peeps!

I don't know if anyone's been paying attention lately, but J Scott Campbell is the freakin' man! I've been looking at a lot of stuff by him lately and his style has evolved. It's almost like he's taken a step back a little with his exaggerated proportions and it's really developed into some of the most beautiful artwork i've looked at in a while. His line work is top notch (always has been). You know how his women used to almost be too curvy? Like, sometimes from their skinny midsection to their hips it was crazy drastic. Like literally looking at a hour glass? Everythings settled a little making everything that much more beautifully subtle. Check out his calender (I heard he's working on another one) and also check out youtube. Just type in J Scott Campbell and you can find videos of him sketching at cons, at his house too I think and there's even an 8 part series of him lecturing/sketching at a con. All that's real cool, but if you just google J Scott Campbell, and then scroll all the way down to the bottom of the screen there's a website -[link] - where the dude draws for literally a hour and 50 minutes or so. He's sketching different stuff, and shows some of the comissions he's working on, and the best part, if you watch to the end (u could probably skip ahead too) he shows a bunch of sketches he's working on and some layouts. And in those layouts, there's like 5 or 6 pages of the spiderman stuff he's working on. When that comes out I'm gonna be first in line at the comic shop to get it. And I know, Campbell's the big madonna like artist, but I don't care. He's the man.
As for me, right now I'm working on some samples (very slowly might I add) and a painting that I've been doing for my wife (also very slowly) but there should be some work there real soon that I can post. Oh, and my flag football team got second. We lost in the championship at the end :(
Hope everyone had a good Halloween, Jess and I did. Colt went as Batman this year after being Joker last year. Chip off the old block right?

My flag football team is second ranked in our league. Playoffs start Sunday. If we win our first, we play right after for the championship. Wish us luck.
I'm waiting on some final directions from the people I'm doing the plumbing design for. But they loved the initial sketch enough they told my contact lady that I'm a genius. Not the reaction I get from editors typically, but good enough for now right? I also sent my samples to an editor at Wildstorm, the guy was nice with his review and then sent me a sample script to work from. I started on it but am having some confusion with some of the terminology. What's a page deep panel? Anyway, when I'm finished I'll send it back, and hopefully he'll like enough to offer me some work, cause I'm dying for some extra dough right now. My car broke down and I'm trying to get some work done on my house so I can get it appraised and redo some of my loan stuff on it. Not to mention the wife's b-day and Christmas coming up. Oh well.
Colten wants to be Batman for halloween. Joker last year, the Dark Knight this time. Seeing the pattern?

long time no see

So..............I have been drawing, and have been on DA just not posting a lot. My wife and I have really been looking into different options as far as, going back to school, keeping what we are doing, getting a second job. All kinds of stuff, and so I'm pretty swamped. Plus I got a 360 since last I wrote. Good news, I'm ready do go with my art. I went to Chicago and got some pretty nice reviews from everyone. There was a guy in front of me at the Aspen booth, ready to have Vince Hernandez look at his stuff, and Vince told him he had no idea what was going on in the story, and really just kind of laid it out there for this kid. And I felt bad for him, cause I've been there (and was somewhat worried about being there again just moments later). But then Vince looked at my stuff, and asked me if I went to school for art. Which was an awesome compliment, because no, not at all have I. He told me I definately knew what I was doing, and the talent is there, just that I needed to define my style more, with something that seperates me from everyone else. He said do that, and I'll get more work. So that's what I'm gonna work on.
Also, I'm working on a new thing, for myself, all by myself. I'll post some on that once I'm way into it.

And, I'm working on some design stuff for a plumber who's looking to have some weird stuff put onto his work vehicle, that apparently other artists have told him they can't do. How lame of them. Any way, I'm starting that and hoping I give him what he's looking for. Everything else is chill. Colten is awesome and my flag football team is 2 and 1. Our only loss to the undefeated team. We play them again Sunday. Wish us luck. Later on.

vacation

Mon Oct 6, 2008, 9:21 AM
so this week i'm off work and on vacation. my wife, my son and i are all in venice florida visiting my grandparents. we don't go on a lot of vacations so this is a little bit of a treat for us. it's so nice being down here and seeing the ocean, and all the different wildlife and trees around. the scenery is way different than what you see in missouri. my grandfather is taking us to an art museum later today, and then to a beach where the sand is supposedly like powdered sugar. then we're going to try and go find some sea turtles. on wednesday my grandpa and i are going kayaking somewhere that should allow us to see some alligators. which will be sweet. i'm hoping sometime this weekend i'll have time to pull out the sketchbook and draw some of the wonderful stuff i'm seeing.
